Since my first attempt here, I've been experimenting with a lot of different fabrics on my baby's ultra-sensitive skin (he has eczema and on myself. And I think that I found the perfect combination: organic cotton velours on one side and organic cotton/bamboo terry on the other. I'm love them! They are incredibly soft even on the most sensitive skin and still very efficient. 

And you will be able to reuse them over and over again! 

Depuis ce post j'expérimenté ce concept avec différents types de tissus sur moi-même et sur mon bébé à la peau ultra-sensible (il a de l'eczema). Et ça y est ! Je pense avoir trouvé la parfaite combinaison : velour de coton bio d'un côté et éponge de coton bio de bambou de l'autre.Je les adore ! Ils sont incroyablement doux, même pour les peaux les plus sensibles et ils nettoient incroyablement bien!.

It may sound a little bit crazy but I have a hard time creating new designs, sewing (hey, at some point you need to sell something!), take care of the kids (and even recently end up at the emergency room for a few stitches) AND blog! Sorry, but I plan to improve it for the new year. :)

Holiday recipe: Kabocha Curry Soup Pour les fêtes: Soupe de Potimaron au Curry

This is a wonderful recipe that we've been doing every year during the holiday season for the last years. Even the kids love it!
We use some curry powder that we brought back from our trip to India several years ago, but any curry should work. It is also very easy to make.

Here is what you need:

1 organic kabocha or any tasty winter squash
1 organic apple
1 organic onion
1 table spoon of organic oil
1 cube of organic vegetable bouillon (Rapunzel is our favorite)
2 tea spoon of curry, salt, pepper
crème fraiche or cream to taste
water
a pan
a blender

How to do it:

Peel the kabocha, the apple and the onion. Cut the squash and the apple in squares. Slice the onion. Heat the oil in a pan and fry the onion until light brown. Add the kabocha, the apple, some water, the bouillon cube and the curry. Simmer until tender. Make sure there is some water remaining at the bottom of the pan until the end.

Puree everything using the blender. Add cream, salt and pepper to taste.

Bon appétit !!!

Crafty Sunday: Eco Facial scrubs Des disques à démaquiller écolo

At the moment I'm pretty busy stocking up and creating new items before the Holiday rush. Still I managed to get something crafty done... as a break. :)

Every time I cut one of the sleeved bib, I end up with a perfect round at the neck place. I couldn't throw them away an saved them. I knew what I would do with them but I never took the time to make it happen until today. 

En ce moment, je suis très occupée à faire des stocks et à créer de nouveau articles en prévision du rush de fin d'année, mais j'ai malgré tout réussi à bricoler un peu... pour faire une pause.:)

A chaque fois que je coupe un bavoir à manches, je me retrouve avec un rond parfait d'éponge de bambou bio. Je les ai gardé, mais je n'en avais rien fait jusqu'à ce jour par manque de temps.

Trick or Treat!

I hope that you had a fun and safe Halloween. Ours was really fun, the kids spent a great time trick or treating with their friends and then had even more fun giving treats to the hundreds of kids (really) coming to our house. I'm sure that they are going to talk about it quite a while! :)
J'espère que vous avez passé un Halloween amusant et sûr. Le nôtre a été très réussi. Les enfants ont pris énormément de plaisir à aller de maison en maison avec leurs copains. Mais là où ils ont pris le plus de plaisir c'est encore à offrir des petits cadeaux aux centaines d'enfants (vraiment) qui sont passés par notre maison. Ils n'ont pas fini d'en parler ! :)

Yesterday the kids got finally to carve the pumpkins with their Dad (while Mummy was busy sewing costumes in her studio.) I say finally because they kept asking for it ever since we brought them home.Waiting is not a easy thing for a child. :)
Hier les enfants ont enfin pu sculpter les citrouilles avec leur Papa (pendant que Maman était occupée à coudre les costumes dans son atelier). Je dis enfin, parce qu'ils n'ont eu de cesse de vouloir les décorer depuis que nous les avons ramenées à la maison. Pas facile d'attendre lorsqu'on est un enfant. :)

Getting prepared for Halloween La préparation d'Halloween

Last weekend it was raining so much that we decided to stay home instead of going to the traditional pumpkin farm. But can you imagine Halloween without a pumpkin? We don't. Since the sun was back this afternoon, we walked to our local mock-up pumpkin patch. This is a small field in the middle of the city where pumpkins are brought so that kids and adults can come and choose the pumpkin of their dreams. They didn't grow there, but it is still so much nicer than to go to the next supermarket.

The kids get to chose a wagon. Then they head to the patch to get their pumpkin. Here is what we brought back home:

La pluie tombait tellement le weekend dernier que nous n'avons pas eu le courage d'aller à la traditionnel ferme de citrouilles. Mais pas d'Halloween sans citrouille !!! Et comme le soleil était revenu, nous nous sommes rendu à pied cet après-midi dans le simili champ de citrouilles d'Albany. C'est un terrain vague où tous les ans les petits et les grands peuvent venir choisir la citrouille de leurs rêves. Elles ne sont pas sur pied, mais c'est très sympa quand même. :)

Les enfants ont donc d'abord choisi une petite remorque à la Calvin et Hobbes (j'espère que vous connaissez, sinon courez vite vous en procurer un exemplaire... c'est vraiment croustillant... et tellement vrai ! Si si, d'ailleurs nous avons un petit Calvin à la maison... avec un chat). Ensuite ils sont allés choisir leurs citrouilles. Voici notre butin :

When I'm not actively blogging, I'm usually behind my sewing machine or drawing new items, or of course I'm taking care of my kids. And this is what happened since our September trip to France. Busy, busy, busy! I've been busy taking care of orders and making new stuff. So here it is!

This one is really special since the decoration fabric was drawn by... ME! Yes, I was tired by the (too) narrow choice of organic fabrics and decided that I had to make it happen!

Celle-ci est vraiment spéciale puisque le tissus de décoration a été dessiné par... moi ! Et bien oui, comme je n'arrivais pas à trouver ce que je cherchais en tissus bio, et bien j'ai décidé qu'on n'était jamais mieux servi que par soi-même

Lunchbox Ready? Prêt pour la Lunchbox?

I don't know how you get your little one(s) lunchbox ready. To get EVERY single day something different, nutritious, healthy and appealing is quite a challenge for me. 

Ici aux États-Unis, la plupart du temps il n'y a pas de cantine dans les écoles, il faut donc préparer tous les jours un panier repas pour le déjeuner de nos enfants. Et bien figurez-vous que c'est un sacré tour de force de prévoir un repas froid différent, nourrissant, sain et appétissant... TOUS les jours.

So as to always have something ready, I precook batches of different types of beans, veggies and cereals and freeze them in baby jars. This way if I don't have anything ready in the fridge, I just have to unfreeze one or two jars in the morning and add a few things like a piece of whole wheat bread, some cheese or yogurt, fresh veggies and sometimes a fruit, and my little one is ready to go! And it is also helpful for the youngest one who is still home.;)

Afin d'avoir toujours quelque chose de prêt et rapide à préparer, je cuis à l'avance différents types de légumes secs, légumes et céréales que je congèle dans des pots pour bébés. Le matin si je n'ai rien de prêt, j'ai juste à en  décongeler un ou deux et ajouter un peu de pain complet, du fromage ou un yaourt, des légumes et parfois un fruit et le tour est joué! Et figurez-vous que c'est bien utile aussi pour le repas du petit dernier qui est encore à la maison. ;)

Crafty Sunday: a Spotted Tunic Une Vareuse à pois

This is a project I worked on some time ago... on a Sunday afternoon. I wasn't so happy with the yellow strap and decided to make a new one today. It is finally ready.
This tunic was made with a homemade pattern in some leftover fabric from table clothes my son's preschool asked me to make as part of the parent participation hours. The decoration is handpainted using water-based and non-toxic Permaset colors.
And of course it comes with a matching cap similar to this one. :)

C'est un projet sur lequel j'ai travaillé il y a quelques temps déjà un dimanche après-midi, mais je n'étais pas satisfaite de la patte jaune. Je l'ai refaite aujourd'hui, et je peux enfin vous la montrer. 
Il s'agit d'une vareuse (patron maison) faite dans les chutes de nappes que l'école maternelle de mon fils m'avait demandé de faire il y a quelques temps. Et bien oui, ici sous le soleil de Californie non seulement les écoles maternelles coûtent une fortune puisqu'elles sont toutes privées et non-subventionnées. Il n'est pas rare qu'un salaire complet d'un des parents y passe... quand même. Mais en plus elles demandent souvent des parents de fournir quelques heures de travail par mois (courses, réparations de toutes sortes, lessive, etc.) 
Mais revenons-en à notre vareuse... La décoration a été peinte à la main avec de la peinture acrylique non-toxique Permaset. Le bouton vient de ma boite à bouton. Et j'ai bien entendu fait une casquette assortie, dans le meme style que celle-ci. :)

Crafty weekend: a twirly skirt Une jupe qui tourne

Today we were invited to a little girl's bithday party.

This is the exact same smart hooded towel as the blue and the yellow that are already offered in PurePixie's shop: thick Oekotex-100 certified bamboo and organic cotton terry, and organic cotton sateen for the decoration. Just like the other colors it also comes with a strap to help you hold on your baby not on the towel. :)

Crafty Sunday: Kids Organic Bath Mitts Gants de toilette bio pour enfants

My kids had been asking for bath mitts for a few weeks. So here they are after a visit to my organic fabric scrap box. I had way than enough to choose from. Even the organic sateen bias tape comes from left overs. I make all bias tape myself and I can never get to through away pieces that I could use for a later project. These left overs were perfect for this little project!

Mes enfants me réclamaient des gants de toilette depuis un moment. Et bien voilà qui est fait, après une visite à ma boite de chutes de tissus bio. Je n'avais que l'embarras du choix. Même le biais de satin bio est issu de petit restes. Je fabrique tout mon biais moi-même et je ne peux jamais me résoudre à jeter les morceaux qui pourraient servir pour de futurs petits projets. Ils étaient parfaits pour celui-ci !

These bathmitts are very simple, still tonight both my kids were sooo proud to be able to use their own. They fit perfectly their hands and they are so much easier to use than washcloths!

Ils sont tous simples, mais ce soir j'avais deux petits enfants tous fiers de pouvoir se laver avec leur propre gant ! Ils sont parfaitement adaptés à la taille de leurs mains et puis c'est tellement plus facile à utiliser que les carrés d'éponge !

It's been a while since I noticed this card, I was just missing the opportunity to buy it. Unfortunately it came for my dear friend Ronda who is recovering with an incredible energy from a strange auto-immune disease. Hopefully it is going to cheer her up. :)

Crafty Sunday: alterations with Liberty! Dimanche bricolage: Réparations au... Liberty !

What do you do when your kids damage their pants in no time? My oldest one spends his time climbing on trees and playing on the ground with his car and trucks. Even jeans can't stand it too long. Just recently he managed to ruin 3 pairs of pants:

Qu'est-ce que vous faites vous, lorsque vos enfants usent prématurément leurs vêtements ? Mon grand passe sa vie à grimper aux arbres et à jouer par terre avec ses véhicules en tous genres. Même les jeans ne supportent pas ce traitement. Dernièrement, il a quand même réussi à user 3 pantalons :

I could have turned them into shorts, glue or sew a terrible patch to cover the hole or even worth, throw them away. Instead, I decided to give them a new life and a try something a little bit more complicated and time consuming: I took them partially appart and cut some of my fabulous Liberty of London fabric to fix the hole. Here is the result:

J'aurais pu les transformer en shorts, coller ou coudre une horrible pièce ou pire de les jeter. J'ai décidé de leur donner une nouvelle vie et de tenter quelque chose d'un peu plus compliqué : je les ai en partie démontés, j'ai coupé dans le beau Liberty of London auquel je n'avais pas encore ose toucher et je les ai réparés en les décorant. Voici le résultat :

... organic olive oil soaps!!! It's been such a long time since I started to look for organic perfume-free soap that were not made out of coconut oil. Thanks to Jo de GreenSpringsO I can put an end to my quest!

... des savons à l'huile d'olive bio !!! Ça fait tellement longtemps que je cherchais des savons bio sans parfum et qui ne soit pas à l'huile de palme, et bien je crois que ma quête est belle est bien finie grâce à Jo de GreenSpringsO !

I use these soaps to wash my kids while keeping them away from harmful chemicals (parabens, synthetic perfumes, etc.) contained in most soaps made for kids. I also use them to wash my kids' clothing and in particular my youngest one's cloth diapers. His high sensitive skin can't stand any laundry detergents even the "green-" and perfume-free ones...

Ces savons me servent à laver mes enfants en douceur et en évitant tous ces produits dangeureux (parabenes, parfums synthetiques, etc.) que contiennent la plupart des savons pour enfants. Ils me servent également à laver leur linge et en particulier les couches lavables du petit dernier à la peau si fragile qu'elle ne supporte pas les lessives, même écologiques et sans parfum...


These yummy soaps came safely wrapped along with a little gift bag containing yummy samples and in particular some fabulous "face food": smooth, creamy, super nutritious but not oily... This may be my next purchase! :)

Les superbes savons sont arrivés bien emballés avec en cadeau un petit sac d'échantillons dont une crème pour le visage completement incroyable... douce, onctueuse, et ultra-nourrissante sans être grasse... Je crois bien que je vais me laisser tenter... :)

After making bathrobes and hooded towels, I surely had to go for it. So here it is! PurePixie's Etsy store offers now an eco-friendly bath poncho for those of you who don't want to have to deal with sleeves, but still want something super soft, warm and cute to dry their little one after the bath.

This bath poncho is made out of the same organic cotton and bamboo fabric as the bathrobes. The pixie hood is attached with snap and can be removed so as to offer you a lot of flexibility.

The bag is beautiful! Large, cute, functional, well made... I couldn't have dreamed something nicer! And on the top of it she attached a small gift. How sweet!
Now I'm going to have a beautiful bag to carry everything the Mom I am needs (diapers, changing mat, wipes, sun hats, change of cloths, etc.) And on the top of it is matches perfectily my red stroller. I couldn't dream anything better! Thank you so much Josée !!!

Long time no see... / Ca faisait longtemps...

I know, it's been way too long since I came here. Between orders and plenty of ideas to be tested and developed, I haven't been here in a while. Sorryyy!!!

Et bien oui, ca fait bien trop longtemps que je suis passée par ici. Entre les commandes et pleins d'idées à tester et développer, j'ai été un peu absente. Sorryyyy! :)

After my new patterns got tested on my own kids... poor things? No actually they love these new garments because they are so comfy. My youngest one even got the habit to say "Mommy made it" every time we dress him. So cute...

Après avoir testé les prototypes de mes patrons pendant plusieurs semaines sur mes enfants... pauvres petits ? Nooon, ils sont bien trop contents d'avoir des vêtements agréables à porter. La phrase préférée de mon petit dernier en ce moment lorsqu'on l'habille est "maman a fait" fièrement en montrant ses vêtements. C'est vraiment trop mignon !

DIY: Stokke-tripp-trapp chair cushion Tuto : Un cousin pour chaise Stokke-tripp-trapp

We love Stokke Tripp Trapp chairs. We love them so much that we have two of them. One for each kid. If you haven't seen them, this is a wooden chair designed in the 70’s. It looks really good, doesn't take so much space as the plastic one, is easy to clean, comes in all sorts of colors and best of all they aren't made out of plastic. They are quite pricy but since they are so well made, you can find them fairly easily second hand... or may be even third or fouth, who knows? :)

Until recently it didn't bother us not to have any cushion since it was easier to clean that way. But we just started to be really serious about potty training our little one and I finally felt like making something warm and soft for him to sit on.

So here is how to make a cushion that will work with any generation of Tripp Trapp chair.


::What you need::
- a Tripp-Trapp chair (to make the pattern)
- a piece of (organic) cotton for the outside
- some batting for the padding (needlepunched rather than bonded, so as to avoid glues and resins)
- matching thread
- scissors
- a paper bag
- a sewing machine

::How to proceed::
1. Unscrew the seat so as to release it

2. Open a paper bag or take a piece of paper that is large enough.
Display the seat on the paper and trace around it with a pen.


Trace another line 2 cm (3/4") around the first line (seem allowance.)


Cut your pattern

3. Repeat 2. so as to get another paper pattern.
Draw two lines along the long side at 7 cm (2" 3/4) from the top and 7 cm (2" 3/4) cm from the bottom.
Cut out the second pattern and keep both external strips.


4. Lay the three pieces of the pattern down on the fabric. Cut the fabric. Cut the larger piece of pattern twice.

5. Lay the larger piece of the pattern on some needlepunched batting and cut four times the pattern to get four pieces.

6. Hem both smaller pieces on the inside.



7. Take 2 (out of the 4) pieces of batting, put them on top of each other, at the back piece of the cushion right side on top, and then both stripes you just hemed. Serge or zigzag on 3 sides (leave the curved side untouched).



8. Take the remaining 2 pieces of batting, add the top part fabric right side on top. Serge or zigzag all around.

9. Take the top part right side facing up, add the back piece right side against the top part's right side. Pin both pieces together and sew on three sides 1 cm from the border (still miss the curved side).



10. Cut each angle, 2 mm before the stitched line. Turn inside out but leave stripe on the curved side the wrong side facing up.


Sew and serge (or zigzag) the curved side of the cushion. Turn the stripe inside out.

11. Find the center of the cushion and mark it with a pin. Measure the clasp of the chair (width + thickness... mine is 6 cm). Measure also how far it is situated from the border of the seat (mine is 4 cm). Draw the button hole.



12. Sew the button hole. My sewing machine didn't know how to make one that big all by itself, so I had to figure out the width of the satin stitch for both ends and the sides, and make sure that both lines were parallele, but it wasn't that difficult after all.


13. Cut the center line of the button hole using a seam riper making sure that you don't cut any of the thread.





And voilà! Your cushion is ready!!!
Don't forget to screw everything back on and make sure your chair is secure! :)
